The popular Old Trail Youth Soccer program is beginning again on Saturday, September 11th.  Unlike other, competitive soccer programs, this youth program aims to develop coordination and some basic skills for beginners.

Below is information from this year’s coordinators, Lisa and Jeff Saucerman:

Beginning Saturday, September 11th, we will be starting the season of the Old Trail/Crozet Soccer League for children ages 3 to 6.  It is a casual program where the parents coach, kids work in small groups, and then come together at the end.  It is a great program to introduce kids to soccer, help them build skills, meet new friends and have fun!

This is a co-op soccer program, not a drop-off program.  Please plan to remain on the field while your child is at practice.  As a co-op soccer program all parents should plan on helping out in some way.  Here is a list of opportunities that you may sign up for:

1.  Sign up to bring a snack to a practice
2.  Sign up to bring a drink to a practice
3.  Help find a sponsor for t-shirts
4.  Snack coordinator (filled)
5.  Coach one of the teams (2 coaches/team)***** (VERY IMPORTANT!!)
6.  A field assessor: someone who lives in Old Trail (field is good to go or not)
7.  Other

DATES:  Saturdays, September 11 until approximately November 6th/13th
TIME:  9:00 AM until 10 AM
WHO:  Anyone in Crozet age 3 as of September 1 to approximately age 6.
WHERE:  The open field in the middle of Old Trail near the pool
COST:  None
WHAT TO BRING:  Water bottle and soccer ball

WHERE TO PARK: on BROOK VIEW DRIVE, NOT Old Trail Drive.  Brook View is the first right past the pool when coming in from Route 250 on Old Trail Drive.  There is a Google Map here:

One aspect of life in Old Trail Village is the quality of activities available for residents.  The Old Trail Community Association’s Social Committee dedicates significant time and energy creating events to interest and entertain all segments of the our community. In addition to weekly book clubs, pot luck supper nights, and the youth soccer group, the Social Committee organizes large gatherings such as the “Camp Out on the Common” and this past weekend’s “Village Venture.”

The Village Venture Weekend consisted of a neighbors-only golf outing at Old Trail Golf Club Saturday, and a picnic in the park with great fried chicken and games for the kids.

Old Trail Youth Soccer (ages 3-5) was such a hit in the spring, we’re doing it again this fall!  Julie and Tom Bergert are once again organizing a informal soccer program for little ones ages 3 - starting Kindergarten this fall.  We’ll get started the first Saturday after Labor Day Weekend, September 12.

Where:  Western Park Rec Field (in Old Trail Village on Old Trail Drive)

When:  Saturday mornings, 9 a.m. - 10 a.m. (beginning September 12)

Who: All children, ages 3-5 (or starting Kindergarten this fall)

If raining, the practice will be postponed to Sundays - participants will be notified by email.

Each participating child will need to be accompanied by a responsible parent/guardian, and we need coaches and coaching assistants. Practices are a lot of fun, beginning with some warm-up exercises, then skill drills, followed by a “game” at the conclusion of practice.  This is a great opportunity to get your little ones socializing, meet other parents, and enjoy watching the kids play together.

For more information, and to sign up, contact Julie Bergert, organizer.

ark-bowark-craneark-side

For many Charlottesville and Albemarle-area residents, their first experience with Old Trail Village was during the filming of the Steve Carell movie Evan Almighty (released June 2007).  The film, a comedy follow-up to Jim Carrey’s Bruce Almighty, Evan Almighty follows newly-elected congressman Evan Baxter (Carell) who is contacted by “God” (Moran Freeman) and instructed to build an ark to withstand a coming flood.  Many area residents served as extras on-set, and drove through Old Trail Village just to see the ark and the many animal extras.

Key to the film was the building of Evan’s Ark in the midst of his housing development - scenes for which were filmed on-location in Old Trail Village.  As a part of the film set, the bow, ribs, and most of the starboard side of the ark was built in Old Trail Village across from the site now under construction for the Village Center and pool parking area.  The set construction also included Evan’s “crane”, visible in the right background in the ark photographs.

The ark was demolished following filming; however, some area residents salvaged wood from the temporary construction.  Old Trail Village resident Jim Camblos used cedar from the ark’s bow staves to craft bluebird houses for the many families of bluebirds residing in Old Trail Village.  Last weekend, Camblos and developer Gaylon Beights (also a resident of Old Trail Village) installed several of the ark birdhouses around Old Trail (pictured below).  We’ll keep watch to see when the new bluebird families move in and try to catch some pictures!

If you spot a bluebird in Old Trail Village and can get a picture, email me: andrea@oldtrailvillage.com and we’ll post it on the website.
