For many Charlottesville and Albemarle-area residents, their first experience with Old Trail Village was during the filming of the Steve Carell movie Evan Almighty (released June 2007). The film, a comedy follow-up to Jim Carrey’s Bruce Almighty, Evan Almighty follows newly-elected congressman Evan Baxter (Carell) who is contacted by “God” (Moran Freeman) and instructed to build an ark to withstand a coming flood. Many area residents served as extras on-set, and drove through Old Trail Village just to see the ark and the many animal extras.
Key to the film was the building of Evan’s Ark in the midst of his housing development - scenes for which were filmed on-location in Old Trail Village. As a part of the film set, the bow, ribs, and most of the starboard side of the ark was built in Old Trail Village across from the site now under construction for the Village Center and pool parking area. The set construction also included Evan’s “crane”, visible in the right background in the ark photographs.
The ark was demolished following filming; however, some area residents salvaged wood from the temporary construction. Old Trail Village resident Jim Camblos used cedar from the ark’s bow staves to craft bluebird houses for the many families of bluebirds residing in Old Trail Village. Last weekend, Camblos and developer Gaylon Beights (also a resident of Old Trail Village) installed several of the ark birdhouses around Old Trail (pictured below). We’ll keep watch to see when the new bluebird families move in and try to catch some pictures!
If you spot a bluebird in Old Trail Village and can get a picture, email me: andrea@oldtrailvillage.com and we’ll post it on the website.

Charlottesville, Virginia, which has received numerous recognitions and superior rankings over the years, has added another to the list: #11 in the Forbes nationwide list of Best Places for Business and Careers. High levels of educational attainment in the population, low cost of doing business, favorable ratings for job security and anticipated continued high volumes of job growth all combine to make the Charlottesville area a unique and enjoyable place to do business.
The merchants of the Old Trail Village Center certainly seem to agree with Forbes’s assessment; of the 9 businesses located in the OTVC, 5 are completely new ventures. Trailside Coffee, Derrico’s, Face Value Salon and Studio, Seg-Ville, and Zestivities! are new companies created specifically in response to the opportunities of the Old Trail Village Center and the growth in Western Albemarle County. ACAC Fitness and Wellness Center and Augusta Medical Center - while established businesses - each are making the OTVC their first location for new “branch” business models. Anna’s Ristorante Italiano and Pizza also is opening it’s first expansion in adding the Old Trail location to its successful Maury Street restaurant, already a Charlottesville tradition for over thirty years. ACCESS Home Mortgage and the practice of Dr. George Guess are both relocations of current enterprises.
The Old Trail Village Center will be opening soon - check this Old Trail Village News blog often for postings regarding the upcoming grand opening this spring.

Beights Corporation is excited to announce the addition of another business to the Old Trail Village Center: Zestivities! Casual Entertaining and Gifts. Developed by owner Victoria Rich, Zestivities! will offer a wide array of gifts for all occasions, wine accessories, and decorative objects for the home.
Rich, a Crozet resident, created Zestivities! in response to a need for more gift options in the Western Albemarle area. Says Victoria, “When you’re going to someone’s home for dinner, or if you’re attending a baby or bridal shower, or a birthday celebration, you need a variety of choices and you don’t want to have to drive to Charlottesville or Waynesboro - sometimes you just don’t have the time for that. Zestivities! will have a full section for baby gifts, as well as keepsake pieces to mark any special occasion.” Her location in the Old Trail Village Center will provide walking distance convenience to Old Trail Village residents and Village Center patrons, and will be just two minutes from historic Downtown Crozet.
To make gift buying and sending even easier for her customers, Rich will also be offering pack and ship services customers as Zestivities! will be an official UPS ship point. Local residents needing to ship packages via UPS will now be able to utilize Zestivities! as a shipping source - a great benefit to those in the Western Albemarle region.
A sampling of items offered in the new shop are:
In addition to the gift objects, Rich will also supply a full line of sauces and dips, some custom-labeled and others from fine vendors across the region. Zestivities! will have a tasting bar for customers to sample the dips, sauces, flavored oils, and tapenades prior to purchase.
Zestivities! will be located with her sister store, Seg-Ville, Inc., on the first floor of the Old Trail Village Center Building I, between the Augusta Medical Center practice and the proposed Old Trail Village Welcome Center.

Anna’s Ristorante Italiano and Pizza was the first business to join the Old Trail Village Center in Crozet, VA, announcing their lease-signing in March of 2008. A locally-owned and operated business, the proprietresses of Anna’s Pizza have been operating the eatery on Maury Avenue for three generations. Anna’s Pizza No. 5 on Maury will continue operations, serving Charlottesville families and UVa students; the second location in the Old Trail Village Center will bring their delicious Italian dishes to families in Western Albemarle.
The new location in the Village Center is much larger than the original shop; the family owners (granddaughters of “Anna” who began the business) took advantage of the opportunity to design a space perfectly suited to the expanded menu and services of the new location. In addition to pizza, the menu of the OTVC location will include an assortment of baked pasta dishes and fresh desserts.
A special feature of the OTVC Anna’s Pizza is the room for private events. Area residents will be able to reserve the room to host meetings and special parties, continuing the tradition of hosting youth sports teams for post-game celebrations. Anna’s Pizza at Old Trail will also expand their catering options and may offer delivery.
