The Albemarle Ballet Theatre and the Studio for the Performing Arts paint the stage at PVCC’s Dickinson Theatre with a colorful palette of dance on Sunday May 31st at 3PM.  Their 5th Spring Dance Gala is a variety of contemporary and classical ballet, jazz, and modern dance that will titillate the senses of all ages.

Two new contemporary works by Nicky Hart include a variety of dance techniques from ballet and modern to Afro-Caribbean. The dancers’ movements are driven by the contrasting sympathetic tones and high energy of the music in Bound. The warm, mellow, flowing rhythms of Angolan music support the fluid movements in a beautiful creation called Twine.

The show will open with the Doll Shop, a ballet story about young girl that visits a magical Doll Shop with her family to choose a present for her eighth birthday. The little girl believes that the Fairy Doll possesses a special secret, hides from her family and the shopkeeper to try and discover the Fairy Doll’s secret.

Forces Centrifugal, created by Rachael Shaw of R Squared and Miki Lizst, with its whirlpool-like movements, explores human interaction and connection. They Who Are, fresh, dynamic jazz choreography by Autumn Proctor, plays on the push and pull of influential factors versus the force of individual expression.

Two soloists will perform the famed Don Quixote Kitri and Dying Swan variations to accent this flavorful show. Guest artists from Charlottesville Ballet will perform two works choreographed by their Artistic Director Ariadne Conner. One piece will be accompanied by a live cellist.

Regardless of what decade of life you are in, this show will be a bright spot to launch your summer. At $9 for adults and $7 for children and seniors, this show is the best entertainment value in town. Tickets are available at the theater, online at http://Tickets.aBallet.org, or call 434.823.8888

The latest issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance has ranked Charlottesville, VA, as No. 4 on its list of “Best Cities, 2009.”  Described by Kiplinger’s as having, “…an unexpected blend of Southern charm and liberal edge, with a strong business base,” the Charlottesville-Albemarle area offers opportunities for all people with a variety of intellectual and entertainment opportunities surrounded by the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains.  Albemarle County (which includes Charlottesville City) is conveniently located in Central Virginia, and is just 1 hour from the state capital, Richmond, 2 hours from Washington, D.C., and 3 hours from the beach. Perfect!

Sidewalls begun, slab is set, and the pool house is getting windows and a roof already!

These new pics reveal more of the pool’s size, as I have included images of the construction folks in the pool, which provides a sense of the scale.
