da Luca Café and Wine Bar will host its Grand Opening Thursday, September 17th.  Located in the Old Trail Village Center, da Luca will offer Mediterranean-style tapas (”small plates”), music, and a broad selection of wines and beers from local sources and around the world.

This attractive new space will feature a variety of activities and special events such as tasting dinners, movie nights, game watch events, and live music.  A unique feature of the wine bar is that da Luca offers wine retail, allowing customers to take home bottles of their favorite vintages after tasting or enjoying with a meal.

Another great activity from Old Trail Resident Julie Bergert:

Music Together is a fun, upbeat, hands-on program designed to involve parents and their children with music offered by a very caring and talented young couple in Charlottesville.  They are considering offering the program here in Crozet and have set up a Demo class at the Crozet Library this Friday, August 28. There will be a class offered at both 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Please read the note from the director Estela Knott, below.

Music Together, Early Childhood Music Classes for Families

Hi,

I wanted to let you all know about a free Music Together demonstration classes coming to Crozet very soon.  Music is such an important part of our cultural heritage and everyone has the ability to be musical. That’s why we want to encourage families to start early making music together.  My husband Dave and I are both musicians who fell in love with the Music Together philosophy several years ago before we started our own little family.  We teach it because we see how much joy it brings to little ones and the adults who love them! We are always open to starting classes that suit family work schedules, play groups and so forth, so if you can’t make it to this demo class let us know and we can work on schedule another.

Free Demonstration Class in Crozet

The owner of Thai ‘99 confirmed this evening that they are, indeed, expanding to the Crozet area.  The Crozet location will make the third restaurant for the local chain; other locations are on 29 North, behind Albemarle Square Shopping Center, and on Fontaine Avenue.

“We hope to open in two months,” said the owner this evening.

Thai ‘99 is just one of the many restuarants choosing Crozet and the Western Albemarle region for new locations. Recent additions to the area are two Chinese-American restaurants, 3 coffee shops, a Greek/Mediterranean restaurant, Italian family-style restuarant, and a tapas-style Wine Bar and Cafe.

As reported in today’s Daily Progress newspaper, the University of Virginia maintains its ranking on the US News and World Report’s annual assessment of the nation’s institutions of higher-education.

According to the article by local reporter Brian McNeill,

“UVa has been ranked the No. 2 public school every year since 2005. It has been ranked as either No. 1 or No. 2 every year since 1992.

‘We like it that U.S. News continues to rank UVa among the nation’s best,’ said UVa President John T. Casteen III in a statement. ‘Obviously, the ranking helps attract qualified students and underscores the quality of work done by faculty and staff members.’ … Harvard University remained the rankings’ No. 1 overall university, tied with Princeton, while the University of California, Berkeley retained its rank as the No. 1 public university spot.”

Given the careful preservation of nightsky in Old Trail Village due to downlighting and lack of streetlamps, Old Trail Village makes a spectacular viewing ground for the Perseid Meteor Shower, visible tonight, August 12th, at its peak frequency.

An annual occurrence, the Perseids Meteor Shower is the result of the Earth passing through the tail debris of the Swift-Tuttle Comet.  More can be read about this phenomenon on the NASA site:

Old Trail Youth Soccer (ages 3-5) was such a hit in the spring, we’re doing it again this fall!  Julie and Tom Bergert are once again organizing a informal soccer program for little ones ages 3 - starting Kindergarten this fall.  We’ll get started the first Saturday after Labor Day Weekend, September 12.

Where:  Western Park Rec Field (in Old Trail Village on Old Trail Drive)

When:  Saturday mornings, 9 a.m. - 10 a.m. (beginning September 12)

Who: All children, ages 3-5 (or starting Kindergarten this fall)

If raining, the practice will be postponed to Sundays - participants will be notified by email.

Each participating child will need to be accompanied by a responsible parent/guardian, and we need coaches and coaching assistants. Practices are a lot of fun, beginning with some warm-up exercises, then skill drills, followed by a “game” at the conclusion of practice.  This is a great opportunity to get your little ones socializing, meet other parents, and enjoy watching the kids play together.

For more information, and to sign up, contact Julie Bergert, organizer.
